The Poggio Il Castellare vineyards are located
in the hamlet of Castelnuovo Abate, next to the spectacular panorama
of the Abbey of Saint Antimo, opposite the Val d’Orcia (Orcia Valley)
from which Mount Amiata rises imposingly.
“Castellare”, the name of the farming estate, originates from
an old Etruscan settlement. The ruins of the houses and towers of this
settlement can be found on this hill. Starting off from this hill,
one can go for wonderful walks through the small, old paths that lead to
the Abbey. Sunset watched from the Abbey of Saint Antimo is considered
one of the greatest marvels of the world. According to popular tradition,
meeting in Sant Antimo at sunset fills one with emotions that will never
be forgotten.
The name “Tenuta Poggio Il Castellare“ brings us back to the historical roots of the place: the remains of an ancient settlement, with what remains of houses and towers on top of the homonymous hill, beside the vineyards. This area called Colline dei Vigneti at the foot of Monte Castellare is one of the most prestigious areas for the production of Brunello due to the characteristics of the soil and the micro-climate. The vineyards of the estate stretch on the sunny slopes overlooking the picturesque landscapes of the Val d’Orcia on one side, of Mount Amiata on another side and, finally, from the Pian del Bosso vineyard you can enjoy the mystical sight of the Abbazia di Sant’Antimo (Sant’Antimo Abbey). Poggio Castellare stretches for 8 hectares of land covered with vines. Tenuta Poggio Il Castellare is owned by Bruna Baroncini.

ROSSO DI MONTALCINO 2015
Cherry jujube aromas and flavors mark this sinewy red. Tobacco and leafy underbrush notes abound, causing this to regress on the rustic finish. Best from 2018 through 2023.

POGGIO IL CASTELLARE
ROSSO DI MONTALCINO 2015
Baby Brunello at its best! Every now and again we are blessed with an exceptional vintage where wines are no longer overshadowed by their older brothers. This is the case with the 2015 Rosso di Montalcino, which achieved high quality, almost as good as its big brother Brunello di Montalcino. Buy this by the case, have some now and put some away for decades later.
For over 500 years, the Baroncini family have been growing grapes and olives in the hilltop Tuscan village of San Gimignano. However, it has only been within the last 50 years that the family has begun making wine and have expanded their horizons beyond their walled medieval village. On the site of an ancient Etruscan village, the family established Poggio Il Castellare. Located near the hamlet of Castelnuovo dell’Abate, in the heart of the production zone of Brunello di Montalcino, Poggio Il Castellare is now a rising star in Montalcino. You won’t want to miss out on one of the best vintages for Rosso di Montalcino ever…this is an exciting time for Rosso!
“The 2015 may be the best Rosso di Montalcinos I have ever tasted.”
