Pierre Varenne and his wife Marie-Claude founded this estate and began bottling its wines themselves in 1993. Previously they had sold the production to the co-operative at Gigondas. Today this daughter Cecile and her husband Jean Yves Perez together tend the Estate in Gigondas as well as Jean Yves family Estate in Visan. Domaine de Varoilles is one of the oldest known estates in Burgundy. It covers over 10 hectares and includes Gevrey Chambertin premier cru and grand cru. The Domaine was already cited in the 12th century.
GIGONDAS GRAND CLASSIQUE 2016 This medium-body wine has highly concentrated flavors and rugged tannins that are tamed into a wine with layers and layers of nuanced flavors that change over time. Dark fruit is detected on the nose such as plum and black cherry with notes of licorice and cinnamon that later surface. The flavors are amazingly concentrated perhaps stemming from vines that are over 60 years old.
